DTF Adhesive Powder: Everything You Need to Know About Hot-Melt Powder

DTF adhesive powder — also called DTF hot-melt powder or DTF glue powder — is the unsung hero of the DTF printing process. Without it, your beautifully printed DTF transfer would simply peel off the garment after the first wash. With the right powder applied correctly, your transfers bond permanently to fabric and survive hundreds of wash cycles.

In this guide, Texas DTF Supplies covers everything you need to know about DTF adhesive powder — types, application, curing, and troubleshooting.

What Is DTF Adhesive Powder?

DTF adhesive powder is a thermoplastic hot-melt adhesive in powder form. After your DTF design is printed onto the transfer film, the adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink surface. When heated in a powder shaker/dryer (or under a heat gun), the powder melts and bonds to the ink, creating a sticky adhesive layer. When this transfer is then heat pressed onto a garment, the adhesive bonds permanently to the fabric fibers.

Types of DTF Adhesive Powder

DTF adhesive powder comes in two main grades:

  • Fine powder — The most popular choice for most DTF applications. Fine powder provides excellent coverage, smooth finish, and strong adhesion. Ideal for detailed designs and most fabric types.
  • Coarse powder — Used for specialty applications where a thicker adhesive layer is needed. Less common in standard DTF printing.

Texas DTF Supplies stocks fine DTF adhesive powder — the professional standard for most print shops.

How to Apply DTF Adhesive Powder Correctly

Proper powder application is critical for transfer quality and wash durability. Follow these steps:

  1. Print your design on DTF transfer film with your DTF printer
  2. Apply powder immediately — while the ink is still wet, pour or shake adhesive powder over the entire printed surface
  3. Shake off excess — tilt and gently tap the film to remove loose powder from unprinted areas
  4. Cure the powder — pass through a powder shaker/dryer at 250–300°F (120–150°C) for 2-3 minutes, or use a heat gun until the powder is fully melted and transparent
  5. Allow to cool before stacking or rolling the cured film

DTF Powder Troubleshooting

Transfers peeling after washing: Usually caused by insufficient powder curing or incorrect heat press settings. Ensure powder is fully melted (transparent) before pressing, and verify heat press temperature (320°F / 160°C) and dwell time (10-15 seconds).

Powder residue on unprinted areas: Excess powder was not fully removed before curing. Shake and tap more thoroughly before curing, or use a powder shaker machine for consistent results.

Cracking transfers: Often caused by over-curing the powder or using too much powder. Reduce curing temperature or time, and ensure even powder application.
