DTF Film Guide: Instant Peel vs Cold Peel — Which Is Right for You?

When it comes to DTF transfer film, one of the most common questions we hear from print shops is: What is the difference between instant peel and cold peel DTF film, and which one should I use?

The answer depends on your workflow, your heat press setup, and the types of garments you print on. In this guide, the team at Texas DTF Supplies breaks down both film types so you can make the right choice for your business.

What Is DTF Transfer Film?

DTF transfer film is the clear PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film that your DTF printer prints on. After printing, adhesive powder is applied and cured, creating a ready-to-press transfer. The film is then heat pressed onto the garment and peeled away, leaving the vibrant, durable design bonded to the fabric.

DTF film is available in two primary types based on peel behavior: instant peel (hot peel) and cold peel.

Instant Peel (Hot Peel) DTF Film

Instant peel DTF film — also called hot peel film — can be peeled immediately after the heat press cycle while the transfer is still hot. This dramatically speeds up production, making it the preferred choice for high-volume print shops.

Advantages of instant peel DTF film:

  • Faster production — peel immediately after pressing, no waiting
  • Higher throughput for busy print operations
  • Slightly glossier finish on the final transfer
  • Ideal for cotton, polyester, and most fabric blends

Considerations:

  • Requires precise heat press calibration — too hot or too cold affects peel quality
  • Less forgiving of heat press temperature variations

Cold Peel DTF Film

Cold peel DTF film must be allowed to cool completely before peeling. This typically takes 30-60 seconds after pressing. While slower, cold peel film is more forgiving and often produces a slightly more matte finish.

Advantages of cold peel DTF film:

  • More forgiving of heat press temperature variations
  • Slightly softer, more matte finish
  • Better for beginners or shops with older heat press equipment

Considerations:

  • Slower production — must wait for cooling between each press
  • Not ideal for high-volume operations

Which DTF Film Width Do You Need?

DTF film comes in several widths to match different printer configurations. Texas DTF Supplies stocks the three most popular widths:

  • 13" DTF Film — Ideal for A3+ DTF printers and smaller print areas
  • 14.5" DTF Film — The most popular width for mid-size DTF printers
  • 24" DTF Film — For wide-format DTF printers and gang sheet printing

Our Recommendation: Instant Peel DTF Film

For most print shops — especially those focused on production speed and throughput — we recommend instant peel DTF film. It is faster, more efficient, and produces excellent results when your heat press is properly calibrated.

Texas DTF Supplies stocks premium instant peel DTF film in all three widths, shipped from our Houston warehouse with same-day delivery available across the Houston metro area.
